I think perhaps my drypoint etching entitled 1:3728 needs a bit of explanation. The print is inspired by my obsession and amazement at the energy and dynamism of plant reproduction and growth. I started by creating the plate on the left using conventual drawing and mark-making techniques. I then open the poppy seed head, removed the seeds and counted them. There were 3728 seeds! It took ages and I had to keep stopping as I was going cross-eyed!
I then created the second plate on the right, using 3728 dots to represent each of the seeds in the poppy head. I wanted to suggest that out of one seed head came so much potential new life. This incredible ability to generate new life is so mind-blowing and exciting.
